Volunteer Opportunity for Nutrition EducationVirginia Cooperative Extension is recruiting volunteers to deliver nutrition education to limited-income groups in Roanoke and the New River Valley. Extension would love to have SW-VA Dietetic Association members volunteer as we are already experts on the information provided.
Virginia Cooperative Extension will train volunteers on the specific curriculum materials, provide volunteer position description, and identify places in the community near you to provide participants nutrition education. It is a very minimal training and you can donate as many hours or as little hours as you have time for.

- How Many Calories Should I Eat?
- Sun, 20 May 2012 05:00:00 PDT - The number of calories people should eat each day depends on several factors, including their age, size, height, sex, lifestyle, and overall general health. Pregnant women who are overweight or obese can have serious health risks including high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, diabetes and premature birth, but there is good news...
- Dialysis Patients Benefit From 5-Minute Chat
- Fri, 18 May 2012 00:00:00 PDT - The constant health education that dialysis patients receive can lead to boredom and noncompliance. But a Loyola University Medical Center study has found that brief, casual chats can be a significant benefit to patients. The technique is called "talking control support therapy." As patients were undergoing dialysis, researchers stopped by for informal chats...
- A Very Sugary Diet Makes You Stupid
- Fri, 18 May 2012 00:00:00 PDT - As we near the final year exams for schools and universities, students should be wary of powering up on buckets of soda and pocketfuls of candy bars. A UCLA study on rats suggests that fructose slows down the brain and memory functions. Too much sweetness can also prevent learning. The findings are published in Journal of Physiology and also show omega-3 fatty acids helping to negate the effect...
Frontiers in Nutrition and Cancer Webinar
Vitamin D is increasingly recognized to have multiple physiological roles beyond its function in bone health. Emerging evidence suggests that higher vitamin D exposures may reduce risk of certain cancers in some populations, but can possibly increase risk in others. We will discuss current nutritional guidelines, strength of current research, and some potential mechanisms by which vitamin D may influence cancer risk.
We invite clinicians and researchers to register for the second free webinar in NCI's Frontiers in Nutrition and Cancer Prevention Series. Experts in the field of nutrition will update you on the role of vitamin D, from dietary guidelines to clinical research to basic science
